What is Rotaract?

Rotaract is a youth based organization, i.e. a youth wing of rotary international. There are more than 7500 clubs all over the world, and about 1, 76,000 rotaractors. Rotaract has rotary, inner wheel [ladies club] & senior citizen clubs as their partner in service. Rotaract and Rotary are thus Parent-Child. There are about 75 active clubs in Mumbai and more than 2000 rotaractors. Rotaract is a non - profit organization.

People aged between ages 18-30 are only eligible to join Rotaract. All things at Rotaract begin at Grass-root level, with members addressing their local and societal needs through a framework of  “Friendship and service” .The purpose of rotaract is to enhance knowledge and skills that will assist the “Rotractors” in their own professional development, to address the social needs of the society through a large chain promoting friendship and oneness. Rotaract is thus a worldwide phenomenon, a movement a joint effort to make a difference & to be the difference.

Since 2010 - 11, major focus has been diverted towards building leaders and encouraging management and building of ideas for bigger opportunities in life with respect to daily routine or public speaking or even business for that matter. That has given rise to the most upcoming avenue at Rotaract - "Entrepreneurship".

The Organization

Rotaract is an international organization for the youth in the age category of 18 through 30 years, who believe they can make a difference. The purpose of Rotaract is to provide an opportunity for young men and women to enhance knowledge and skills that will assist them in professional development, to address the physical and social needs of their communities, and to promote better relations amongst all people worldwide through a framework of friendship and service.

The Movement
Rotaract stands for “Rotary in Action”. It was officially inaugurated by Rotary International President Luther Hodges during January 1968, which means Rotaract Movement is celebrating its 40th Year. Rotaract Club of North Charlotte, chartered on 13th March 1968 at North California was the first club. The decision to adopt the program came at a time when student protests worldwide were of growing concern to Rotarians. Rotaract was the means of challenging the energies of the young adults into positive activities that could benefit their community.

A Phenomenon

Rotaract originally began as a Rotary International youth programme. Today it continues to experience its phenomenal growth. There are currently more that 7,500 Rotaract Clubs spread over 155 countries, with an estimated membership of more than 173,000 Rotaractors. The program continues to grow making it a true global movement with motto of ‘Self Development through Service and Fellowship'.
